BOOT CAMP VIDEO

Jan Hall - Reno, Nevada
I had the pleasure of attending Potato’s Tevis Trail Boot Camp the first weekend in March. In addition to being a truly remarkable learning experience, it was a great deal of fun. Decades ago I routinely completed multi-day trail events, including an annual ride across my home state of Michigan, but I’m new to the sport of endurance riding.
Two days of riding portions of the Tevis trail with Potato confirmed my sense that this is clearly a sport I will enjoy.
The benefit of riding with such an experienced Tevis competitor was obvious within a few minutes of starting out on Saturday.
I was quickly introduced to the importance of sustaining a consistent ground-covering gait over varied and challenging terrain. Of course I knew from reading about and observing endurance events that a brisk, sustainable gait was a crucial component of a successful ride, but actually experiencing it has fundamentally changed my training approach. I also learned about adjusting my riding style to suit the terrain (rocky, steep, muddy, etc.), thereby reducing the physical stress on my horse, and preventing undue fatigue. This included learning the proper technique for riding up a steep incline without hindering my horse – i.e. getting my weight off her haunches and balancing my center of gravity over hers as she climbs.
The tangible lessons were frequent and varied over the two days, but the opportunity to just observe Potato’s technique was equally valuable. In observing his approach, it became obvious why he has successfully completed 19 Tevis rides, has won at least once, and is frequently among the top ten finishers. I’m certain that if I have the chance to attend another training weekend this year, I’ll learn even more the second time around. Whether you’re new to the sport, like me, or just want to take your endurance riding to the next level, Potato’s Trail Boot Camp will set you on a gallop toward your goal.

Cost per day training at Potato's Boot Camp is $500 USD.

In Potato's Boot Camp you will ride portions of the Western States Trail and get one on one training and advice from someone who has finished 19 times, which includes 2 wins and many other finishes in the top ten. - So Potato knows the trail!

You will stay at Potato's PR Sliger Mine Ranch that is situated right off the Tevis Trail. The cost includes a roof over your head and some grub. RV spaces and/or camping if preferred are totally ok, and there is plenty of room at Potato's PR Ranch.

If you need a horse, Potato can provide you with a Tevis finisher.   If you lease one of Potato's horses, you most likely will be riding a horse that has finished well in the 100 mile endurance ride.

*Potato's Boot Camp is instructed by Potato, an accomplished Tevis winner, and this means you can ask any questions you have that pertain to the Tevis event.

*When attending Boot Camp you will ride different parts of the Western States Trail. Potato’s one on one training focuses on riding strategy, the right tack to use, the way to ride fast and make it easy for your horse. With the aid of video, Potato will diagnose your riding skill and show you what you’re doing right and where improvement is needed.
